ORTHOVISC (High Molecular Weight Hyaluronan) is a treatment made from ultra-pure hyaluronan, a naturally occurring lubricant found in healthy knee joints.

What is ORTHOVISC?

Orthovisc is made from pure animal free hyaluronic acid and is used to treat knee pains by injecting into area to offer six months pain relief. The process is referred to as viscosupplementation, where the knee joints are injected (supplemented) with healthy hyaluronic acid lubricant which means that patients can be mobile and independent to carry out their normal daily activities again. This process is much more effective then taking drugs orally to contain the pain.

What is so unique about ORTHOVISC®?

  • ORTHOVISC extinguishes pain from osteoarthritis for half a year.
  • Many have reported immediate pain relief after the initial treatment.
  • Taken from bacteria, ORTHOVISC’s active ingredient is completely animal free so it will not cause any allergic reactions.
  • Orthovisc imitates the fluid found in knee joints.

Made from hyaluronic acid, a natural substance found inside the human body. It’s key properties are to keep the skin hydrated whilst adding plumpness. HA naturally breaks down in the body during metabolism and is then replaced. However as we gets older and our metabolism slows down, replacement of HA is less often which results in less hydrated skin and less volume in the skin.

Who should not use Orthovisc?

Individuals with skin infections or any skin related diseases, especially at the proposed site of injection.

What are the associated side effects with Orthovisc?

Muscle and back pain have been the most common side effects, as well as headaches and pain at the site of injection.

Fermathron 20mg/2ml is a viscosupplement containing sodium hyaluronate used for injection into the synovial joints of patients with mild to moderate osteoarthritis. It can also be used to treat traumatic or degenerative changes to the synovial joint. Fermathron 20mg/2ml is made up of highly folded, long chained molecules of hyaluronan in the form of sodium hyaluronate. It is made using a patented process of continuous fermentation of the natural bacterium Streptococcus. The sodium Hyaluronate in Fermathron is highly biocompatible as it is chemically the same as hyaluronate within the body. As soon as the Fermathron solution is delivered into the synovial joint, it begins lubricating and performing its shock absorbent activities. What's in the box?
  • 20mg/2ml sterile 1% (w/v) Sodium Hyaluronate in phosphate buffered saline.
  • 1 x 2.0ml pre-filled sterile glass syringe packed within a blister packet.
What are the benefits of Fermathron? Sodium Hyaluronate's essential properties and pseudo plastic behaviour can be used to :
  • Perform shock absorbency properties within the synovial joint
  • Lubricate the synovial compartment
How is treatment carried out? Fermathron is injected 3-5  times on a weekly basis into the synovial compartment. For more severe osteoarthritis treatment to treat more traumatic joints, 5 injections is normal. The site of injection must be clean as well as infection free and disease free. Antiseptic can be used to present the site free from contamination. The skin must be dried prior to treatment. Clean the skin around the injection site with antiseptic and allow to dry before the injection is given. How long will results last for? 5 injections a week can help patients be symptom free for up to 6 months.
DUROLANE by Galderma, is a clear, thick and flexible gel made from a form of a naturally occurring substance called hyaluronic acid, which is the body’s own joint lubricant. It has been designed specifically for injection into joints affected by osteoarthritis (knee and hip), to provide lubrication and cushioning. DUROLANE is different from other products containing hyaluronic acid that are used to treat osteoarthritis, as it is contains Non-Animal Stabilized Hyaluronic Acid (NASHA). This is a substance with greatly improved features compared with older hyaluronic acid products. These features mean that DUROLANE is able to stay within joints for a long time (at least 3 months) whilst still being treated by your body as a natural product. DUROLANE is injected directly into your joint by a qualified doctor and, due to its unique properties, treatment of either hip or knee osteoarthritis involves only one injection. How is Durolane administered? Durolane can be administered in the GP's consulting room and only takes 10 minutes to complete. The advantage of this treatment is that it only requires a single injection into the knee or hip joint area, in comparison to other treatments that require several injections. Therefore the patient is left feeling at ease during the whole process knowing that it takes a short amount of time. The treatment can be carried out again in subsequent visits as and when necessary. What does Durolane actually do once it's injected? The Hyaluronic acid inside Durolane is a natural substance found inside the human body. It's key properties are to act as a shock absorber. HA naturally breaks down in the body during metabolism and is then replaced. However as we get older and our metabolism slows down, replacement of HA is less often which results in less viscoelasticity, resulting in breakdown of the bone and pain as it grinds against the skin. Therefore the replenishment of HA ensures there is continued lubrication between the joints with the added viscoelasticity of HA to control the pain. How long will Durolane last? Compared to other drug treatments, Durolane lasts much longer thanks to hyaluronic acid.

EUFLEXXA (1% sodium hyaluronate) is used to relieve knee pain due to osteoarthritis. It is used in people who do not get enough relief from simple pain medications such as acetaminophen or from exercise and physical therapy.

How does Euflexxa work? The main active ingredient, hyaluronic acid (HA) is a natural substance found inside the human body. It's key properties are to keep the knee lubricated. HA naturally breaks down in the body during metabolism and is then replaced. However as we get older and our metabolism slows down, replacement of HA is less often which results in less lubrication around the joints that we use most frequently. Euflexxa imitates the natural HA found in the human body. Available by prescription it is less invasive method compared to the traditional surgical methods. It is quick to administer and can be carried out at your local GP Surgery. Euflexxa is a safe alternative to non prescriptive medicine relievers that are not achieving the desired pain relief in patients. Ingredients: 1 ml of EUFLEXXA® contains Sodium hyaluronate 10 mg, Sodium chloride 8.5 mg, Disodium hydrogen phosphate dodecahydrate 0.56 mg and Sodium dihydrogen phosphate dihydrate 0.05 mg What cautions should be noted with Euflexxa? Anyone with hypersensitivity to Hyaluronic acid should not use this product. Similarly anyone with a skin infection at the proposed site of infection should refrain from using Euflexxa. Strenuous activities including heavy lifting and sports, must be avoided following injection. Standing for long periods of time should also be avoided, especially over one hour. Euflexxa should not be given to children under the age of 18. What are the associated side effects with Euflexxa? Common side effects include swelling, pain, skin irritation and tenderness at the site of injection. These are normal and will disappear after 2 days.
TendoVis (1×1.2ml) is intended to relieve pain and optimise recovery of tendons and ligaments damaged by acute or chronic injury. In addition, augments the sodium hyaluronate naturally present in the soft tissue surrounding damaged tendons and ligaments and provides support, lubrication and hydration to the affected site thereby providing the ideal environment for healing of the damaged tissue. What are the benefits of TendoVis (1×1.2ml)?
  • Act as a shock absorbent where cartilage has worn down
  • Help treat degeneration in mobility
  • Reduce pain by stopping further tissue damage
  • Improve and benefit physical  mobility
We recommend that you organize 4 or 5 weekly sessions followed by a “maintenance” session every 2 to 3 months, depending on your needs. You can resume your usual routine at the end of the treatment. The redness disappears in just a few hours. The results are immediate and you will see an improvement in the first session. This is a treatment. In the short term, your skin will appear smoother, brighter and firmer. In the longer term, rides and fine lines are reduced and your skin tightens. TendoVis has been demonstrated to relieve pain and optimise recovery in the ankle following first or second degree sprain, to relieve chronic pain and disability of the elbow with lateral epicondylalgia and to relieve pain in patients with symptomatic rotator cuff tendinopathy.
Synvisc-One is an injectable arthritis gel made from a substance called hyaluronan, which is harvested from the fleshy crest on chickens’ heads called chicken combs. The human body also contains hyaluronan. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration approved the gel injection in 2009 to treat osteoarthritis of the knee in people who cannot manage their pain without medication or with pain relievers like acetaminophen. Sanofi Genzyme makes the medication.
What can Synvisc-one be used for? SYNVISC can be used to effectively treat osteoarthritis knee joint pain where the existing lubricant is not enough to act as a barrier during knee movements. Synvisc contains the long chain polymer, hyaluronan which once injected begins to lubricate and cushion the knee joint, eliminating all pain. Hyaluronic is unique due to its repetitive units of disaccharides. SYNVISC® (hylan G-F 20) contains both hylan A and hylan B polymers which are derived from chicken combs. Hylans are derivatives of hyaluronan (sodiumhyaluronate). Hylan G-F 20 is highly effective due to its chemically crosslinkage. Who should not use Synvisc-one? Anyone with allergies to hyaluronan and anyone with a knee or skin infection at the proposed site of injection. More importantly, anyone with allergies to birds and bird products, such as feathers, eggs and bird meat. Breastfeeding and pregnant women should not use Synvisc-One. What is the administration process for Synvisc? SYNVISC is injected directly into the knee over the course of three doctor visits, one week apart. It's a simple, in-office procedure that takes just a few minutes. Both knees can be treated in the same session. Following treatment, care should be taken not to carry out any heavy lifting. Your strength will start to build up again after 2 days. What are the associated side effects with Synvisc? With SYNVISC being administered into the knee joint, and not into the blood, there is much less likely to be any side effects. However, swelling, pain and excess fluid were reported in 7% patients. Rash and Hives have also been reported in some cases. When will I see results with Synvisc? Results can be felt immediately. However, at least 3 injections are required to feel the full optimum effects of the treatment. With each individual case being different, many patients start to see pain relief after 2 months after the initial injection. Long term relief following all three injections can last half a year. The advantages are that Synvisc can be repeatedly used following the advice of a medical professional.
